Impact and Sustainable Investing from an Institutional Investor Perspective

DL Investment Consulting (Diana Lieberman, CFA) provides consulting services to investment organizations and companies interested in the incorporation of sustainability and impact without sacrificing performance.
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines sustainable as follows: a: of, relating to, or being a method of harvesting or using a resource so that the resource is not depleted or permanently damaged; b: of or relating to a lifestyle involving the use of sustainable methods.  My view on sustainable investing starts with this definition and broadly applies it to various aspects of businesses and investment opportunities with the ultimate outcome of having a beneficial social or environmental impact upon the world.

I work with funds, investors and companies that are interested in identifying or incorporating sustainability factors into their practices while maintaining (and possibly adding to) their returns.  Coming from an institutional investment background, I approach the impact area by looking for opportunities where adding impact doesn't mean reducing return or adding uncompensated risk.  A differentiating approach between myself and other impact investors is that I strongly believe that when evaluating these type of impact investments they should be held to the same due diligence and performance standards as non-impact identified investments.  Not all impact investments fall into this category, but within most asset classes and industries they do exist and the number of opportunities are growing.
